Just Another Job?
I thought this article on domestic help was really interesting. It is too often true that people hire the illegal immigrants to do their household chores and then treat them poorly. My family has a maid that comes in twice a week to clean our house. While my family is well off enough to pay for a maid we hired her on the basis that my parents dont have time to clean the house due to the time that their jobs require. Our maid is a part of our family like described in the article. We pay her well and refer her to our neighbors. It had been really interesting to see how her business has bloomed over the years. When she first started cleaning our house she would come by herself or with her son. Now she has two other ladies that she has employed because her demand and business has grown. I wouldn't like to have a maid if I didn't feel like we treated her well and paid her well also. Like described in this article our maid has grown to be a part of the family and is truly valued in it.

I definitely agree with this post. It is very sad to hear the stories of those people who employ illegal immigrants. Also, because they cannot complain or afford to quit they work in horrible conditions, are paid below minimum wage and not to mention are already given the jobs no one else wants. I imagine it must feel nice to know that you have helped out someone so much as your family has helped your maid. She would not be where she is today without the help and lifestyle your family has offered her.
ReplyDeleteIt is really nice to see a well-off American family treating their help like they should be treated. Too often we see people who are actually citizens of this country treated poorly just because of their occupation. A maid pays just as many taxes as anyone else and deserves to be treated like family and it is really nice to see another citizen treating their help justly.
ReplyDeleteMy family has a maid that comes to our house once a week to clean the house and she has been working for us as long as we have lived in Columbia, which had been at least ten years. She is definitely treated as part of the family. She even stays at our house with our dogs over weekends when we have to go out of town. My maid is 60+ years old and she still works for several different families to help provide for her children and grandchildren. I really respect my maid; she is one of the sweetest women I know and such a hard worker. Though doesn’t make a lot of money, she still always buys me, my brother, and my sister Christmas presents every year which she does not have to do but she does it out of the kindness of her heart.
